Did you know the internet was almost called the ‘Intergalactic Computer Network’?
In the 1960s, computer scientist J.C.R.
Licklider envisioned a global network connecting people across the world.
His vision led to ARPANET, the foundation of today’s internet.
Imagine if we were all saying, ‘Let me check that on the Intergalactic Computer Network’ instead of the
internet!
The first-ever email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, but he doesn’t remember what it said!
He was testing the system and sent a random string of letters.
More importantly, he introduced the ‘@’ symbol to email addresses, a decision that shaped digital communication forever.
Without him, your email might look completely different today!
Ever wonder how big the internet really is?
Google alone processes over 8.5 billion searches per day!
That’s more than a million searches every second.
And yet, search engines only index about 10% of the entire web.
The rest?
It’s part of the deep web, a vast digital space hidden from regular search results.
The first website ever created is still online!
In 1991, Tim Berners-Lee launched a simple page explaining how the World Wide Web worked.
It had no images, no flashy design—just text and links.
Compared to today’s websites, it looks ancient, but it laid the foundation for everything we browse now.
You can still visit it today!
