Did you know that comets are often called 'dirty snowballs'?
That’s because they’re made of ice, dust, and rock left over from the early solar system!
When they get close to the Sun, the heat causes the ice to vaporize, creating the glowing coma
and tail we see from Earth.
Some comets even have two tails—one made of gas and another of dust!

Comets come from two distant regions of our solar system: the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.
The Kuiper Belt is a ring of icy bodies beyond Neptune, while the Oort Cloud is a vast,
mysterious sphere of icy objects even farther out.
When a comet gets knocked out of these regions, it begins its long journey toward the Sun.
Some take thousands of years to complete an orbit!

Comets have been visiting Earth’s skies for millennia, and ancient civilizations often saw them as omens.
The famous Halley’s Comet, which appears every 76 years, has been recorded since at least 240 BCE!
Some believed it foretold disasters, while others saw it as a sign of great change.
Today, we know comets are just cosmic travelers, but they still inspire awe!

Comets may have played a key role in bringing water to Earth!
Scientists believe that during the early days of our planet, comets bombarded the surface, delivering ice that melted
into oceans.
Some even think comets could have carried the building blocks of life!
By studying their composition, we’re uncovering clues about the origins of our own planet.

One of the most famous comet encounters happened in 1994 when Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter!
The impact created massive fireballs and left dark scars in Jupiter’s atmosphere for months.
This event showed us how comets can dramatically shape planets.
If a similar comet hit Earth, the effects could be catastrophic!
That’s why scientists track them closely.
