Chernobyl disaster
In April 1986, during a late-night safety test at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, Reactor 4 exploded. The test simulated a power outage, but critical errors were made. Operators disabled key safety systems, and an unstable reactor design caused a massive power surge. As the reactor overheated, it led to two explosions, blowing off the reactor’s roof and releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere. The intense heat ignited graphite inside the reactor, creating a fire that spewed radiation for over a week. Thousands of workers, including firefighters, battled to contain the disaster, many without adequate protection. The radiation spread across Europe, leading to thousands of immediate and long-term health issues. The nearby town of Pripyat was evacuated, and a 30-kilometer exclusion zone remains around Chernobyl to this day. The disaster exposed serious flaws in nuclear safety practices, and its environmental and human impact lingers decades later.
