In the final debate before Canada’s April 28 election, Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative Pierre Poilievre clashed
over affordability, crime, and how to handle Donald Trump.
Carney, a former central banker, emphasized his experience managing crises and promised to stand up to Trump’s threats.
Poilievre, a populist, accused Carney of being no different from Trudeau, saying, “How can we possibly believe that
you are any different?” Donald Trump’s tariffs and annexation threats have become a central issue.
Carney said, “They want our land.
They want our resources.
They want our country.
And we’re all going to stand up against Donald Trump.” He pledged targeted tariffs and internal free trade
to strengthen Canada.
Meanwhile, Poilievre has tried to distance himself from Trump, but critics say he’s too aligned with the former
U.S.
president.
Quebec could decide the election.
The Bloc Québécois, once a strong force, is losing ground to the Liberals, who are polling at 43%
in the province.
Bloc leader Blanchet tried to keep Quebec issues front and center, but Carney’s centrist appeal is winning over
voters.
Indigenous voters are divided.
Some see voting as complicity, others as a chance to influence change.
Carney disavowed his father’s controversial past with residential schools, while Poilievre faces backlash for past comments and defending
a candidate who denied genocide.
As one Indigenous commentator put it, 'Out here in Indian country, it usually feels like you’re looking for
the party that will do the least damage.' With the Liberals and Conservatives dominating, smaller parties like the
NDP and Bloc are fighting for survival.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh pushed for expanded healthcare and social programs, but polls show his party may drop
to just five seats.
Singh warned, 'You can’t entrust all the power to Mr.
Carney.'
