In the final debate before Canada’s April 28 election, Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative Pierre Poilievre clashed
over affordability, crime, and how to handle Donald Trump.
Carney, a former central banker, emphasized his crisis management skills and distanced himself from Justin Trudeau, saying, “I
am a very different person.” Poilievre, known for his populist style, attacked Carney for being part of the
same Liberal machine, asking, “How can we possibly believe that you are any different?” Donald Trump’s tariffs and
annexation threats have become a central issue.
Carney promised targeted tariffs and trade talks post-election, saying, “We can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump
can ever take away.” Meanwhile, Poilievre struggles with perceptions of being too Trump-like, despite distancing himself.
Trump even called Poilievre “no friend of mine,” while praising Carney’s approach as easier to deal with.
Trump’s aggressive stance has sparked a surge in Canadian nationalism.
Carney’s tough rhetoric—“They want our land, our resources, our water.
We will stand up”—has resonated with voters.
His promise to eliminate internal trade barriers by July 1 aims to strengthen Canada from within.
Polls now show the Liberals leading, a dramatic shift from earlier Conservative dominance.
While the Liberals and Conservatives dominate, smaller parties like the NDP and Bloc Québécois are struggling.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh pushed for expanded healthcare, while Bloc leader Blanchet focused on Quebec’s interests.
Both face potential seat losses, with polls showing voters consolidating around the two main parties.
The Chinese Canadian Conservative Association urged voters to reject candidates who undermine ties with China and India.
They criticized both major parties for ignoring community input and warned against divisive foreign policy stances.
This comes amid heightened concerns over foreign interference in Canadian elections.
